The week that was... [02 Aug 2007|07:16pm]
After a whirlwind few days in Devon we are back. Brief summary:

Friday 27th July
Drove to Devon and were on our way to Brixham when a recent car problem started to get worse. I decided that I wanted to get the car to a barrage first thing in the morning and didn’t want to do that in Brixham in case they needed to keep it in. So, we headed back to Exeter and stayed with Dad – he was gad of early arrival and the weather was pretty poor anyway.

Saturday 28th July
Took the car to Kwik Fit first thing and they diagnosed the problem straight away – a massive hole in the tread of the rear right tyre – the guy said it was ready to explode at any point and the 6 hours of motorway driving we’d done the day before was probably not wise and we were very lucky. I will be having words with the garage where the car was serviced just 2 weeks earlier!

After that was sorted we had lunch with Dad and then drove to Dawlish Warren for Denise’s grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. Had a good time and then at midnight I got my presents, from Denise I got 3 Bon Jovi DVDs, 4 Preacher graphic novels, 3 Star Wars graphic novels, a Bon Jovi personalised guitar strap, a scrap booking kit and she’d already given me a Bon Jovi framed picture the day before we left.

Sunday 29th July
My birthday! Had a birthday lunch at the hotel we were staying in and then drove back to Exeter to Mum and Roger’s house. Went to The Passage House in Topsham in the evening for a nice meal.

Monday 30th July
In to town for birthday shopping courtesy of Mum – Denise got a load of clothes and I got an Ibanez RG350DX which I am most delighted with, to say the least!

In the evening we went to Coheba and a had a really nice Spanish Tapas. After a few drinks it was home and to bed.

Tuesday 31st July
Paignton Zoo – one of our favourite places to go and I saw my favourite the Bisons, with their rapidly growing calf. The weather, as it had been since Friday, was beautiful. We had a drink and ice cream back in Exeter by the Quay and then in the evening we went to Saffron, an award winning curry restaurant in Topsham. It was excellent and for the first time I had a Chicken Tava which was fab.

Wednesday 1st August
Back to Dad’s and after a leisurely morning we went to Sidmouth in the afternoon. Denise and I went for a nice walk while Sam and Izzy played in the sea. In the evening we watched The DaVinci Code which unsurprisingly wasn’t a patch on the book.

Thursday 2nd August
We were due to stay another day in Exeter but my back has been giving me problems so we decided to come back today so I can get an appointment with the doc tomorrow morning. So, that brings us to there here and now – back home in Hitchin :D Lots of photos to come…

* * *

We are going to cancel Sky TV – we can save £50 a month and with a Freeview digital recording set-top box we can get most channels we want with recording facilities for a one off £100 payment. I can download anything else I want. With us wanting to start a family we need to start saving and Sky TV just isn’t necessary any more. It will also take away temptation to watch TV when there are better things we can be doing with our time.

Friday was Denise's birthday and we spent the day going too and from Letchworth for my car service and to collect and take back a TV unit which had missing bits - how annoying! Ended up getting one in Hitchin which I then made - hard work but worth it and in dark wood looks much better than the glass unit we had before. It also goes well with the new lounge carpet which got fitted on Friday. Add in new curtains and ightshade and the lounge looks quite awesome!

* * *

The mattress turned up, just a pity I have woken up with backache the last two mornings - Denise thinks its becase I strained myself on Friday lugging furniture boxes and moving sofas. I did my back in badly earlier this year and apparently 'once knackered, always knackered' - great.

* * *

First guitar lesson was on Tuesday went really well - Russ and I have lots to learn; chords, power chords, petatonic scale and more! My fingers need to be able to stretch more! Next lsson is the 25th, so time to get some practice in.

* * *

Yesterday Gary (from work) and I visited Celebration Europe at the Excel Centre in London. Celebration is a big Star Wars convention that usually is held in America but came to London this year to celebrate 30 years of Star Wars.

It was ok, just not much in the way of film stuff to see, not like at the Star Wars Exhibition at County Hall that I went to a few weeks ago. There were some shows but waiting time was way too long. The galleries of fan art were great and I have some websites to check out. There were also a ton of dealers and I managed to get a limited edition hardback edition of Star Wars Legacy Vol 1 - it's not due out until July 27th and even then it'll be just the standard paperback version - yay for the Titan Books stand.

Of course I took a few photos, here is the link and a few teasers: clickety click

O Mattress, Mattress! Wherefore art thou Mattress? [10 Jul 2007|04:05pm]
[ mood | frustrated ]

Long time no entry!

Russ and I have our first guitar lesson tonight with a guitar teacher called Danny who says Richie Sambora was one of his inspirations for picking up a guitar – suits us! Danny's house is being renovated so the lesson will take place at mine – luckily Denise won't be home till late because of a meeting in Birmingham – her ears will be saved!

* * *

The new lounge carpet will be delivered and fitted this Friday, the same day my car goes in for it's service which just happens to be Denise's birthday too – we'll make it good once the boring stuff is out the way. Speaking of house stuff, our mattress died last week, this is what has happened since…

  • Thursday: Ordered mattress for Saturday delivery, paid £30 premium the pleasure!
  • Saturday: Waited for mattress which hadn't turned up by 1.15pm (they say their couriers deliver between 8am and 1pm) – I phoned and they said to call back at 3pm if still not arrived as probably just late. 3pm – still no mattress so I called back and they apologised and said management would call on Monday.
  • Monday: No phone call by midday so I called – mattress was out of stock and they tried to call me on Friday but got no answer. They wouldn't get an answer as I gave them my home number as I was at home on Saturday, you know, waiting for the mattress! Anyway, the mattress was out of stock so they said they'd deliver an alternative today.
  • Tuesday/Today: No mattress by 1pm so phoned again. They said they are running late and it'll be here by 4pm at the latest. It's 3.50pm – still no mattress. I'll give it till 4.30pm and then ring again – stupid stupid company, but very good prices :/

* * *

This past weekend was the first nice weather we've had in ages so after staying in all day Saturday we made the most of Sunday and had a long walk round the lake in St Albans which was broken up by a fantastic Tapas lunch in a great Spanish restaurant called Dalis – I took some photos and they can be seen here: clickety click. Here are just a couple:

The title track to Bon Jovi's new album, Lost Highway, is the theme song for WWE's Great American Bash on July 22nd – never expected that, just a pity they aren't playing live, the show could do with some star power!

Lastly but by far not least – congratulations to 2 very special friends who will be getting married – yay!

Bon Jovi - The O2 - Sunday 25th June 2007 [25 Jun 2007|08:52pm]
[ mood | tired ]

Concert was superb, Bon Jovi were on form and Jon in particular was having an absolute ball. They started the concert with Livin' on a Prayer which was surprising as I was expecting that in one of the encores - great way to kick the concert off though. They played a mix of old and new with a couple of covers including the old faithful; Shout and a stunning version of Hallelujah which gave me goosebumps. Summertime was my early favourite from the new album but after last night I'd say Any Other Day is a front-runner for my favourite song

The support band, Goldspot, were utter pants and would have been better placed in one of the small tents at Glastonbury.

I queued an hour for a t-shirt and they'd run out of the only one I wanted! The event t-shirts were pretty poor - very quick and lazy designs which seemed to be more like adverts for the O2 than Bon Jovi shirts!

The O2 Arena is a superb venue for music, the acoustics are top notch. The organisation and how they have people queuing is on the other hand, quite awful! I'm sure they'll sort it out in time.

Overall it was a top notch convert though, just a shame they've done such long concerts in the past, because at 2 hours I was left wanting and kind of expecting more!

I'm going to see Bon Jovi on Sunday! [21 Jun 2007|11:09am]
Wahooooo!!!!

After being a fan for 21 years I was delighted to hear they were playing at the new O2 Arena. However, tickets sold out before I got any and the only option I had was paying silly money on eBay - no way!

Just by chance I went to Ticketmaster this morning to see some more tickets have been released and Stew wants to go so we are going - wooo hooo!

I get to see Bon Jovi live again!

a total flim weekend [17 Jun 2007|08:14pm]

Aeon Flux (Sky+)
Kept meaning to get it on DVD but then Sky Movies saved me £3 (Tescos at the moment). Enjoyed it - not the best film ever but good enough for a Saturday afternoon. One thing that niggled me, and this is very pedantic, but at one point in the film Aeon dropped a few 'things' after killing a guard. A while later she activated them by whistling and loads of things came rolling through the building - did they multiply in their hibernation state?

Godzilla v King Kong (Sky+)
Whil watching this Denise just laughed - she's not used to watching the great effects of these older films! Kong got hs arsed kicked until he made a great comeback thanks to 'the lightning'.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Cinema)
Good fun film though I thought Jessica Alba was more out of place as Susan Storm than ever before. After the disappointment of Spider-Man 3 it was nice to see a truly despicible bad guy in Dr Doom.

Currently watching Domino (DVD) which is pretty good so far, been wanting to see it for a while to see how Kiera Knightly handled a different role. £3 in Tescos - bargain.

* * *

Played Cars on the PS2 this afternoon - much fun, even Denise played...and beat me! My current status in story mode is having won the first race and am in a mini game looking for 20 postcards!?!?

* * *

Ordered a carpet for the lounge earlier in the wek - will be here in a couple of weeks. We are then going to get all the bedrooms carpeted, our bedroom decorated and are also getting quotes for the back garden to be designed and constructed - £5,000 is the only one we have had back so far - sod that! If we don't get any quites which are much much cheaper than that then I may have to do it mysef - eek!

* * *

Dad moved into his rented house for the 'trial seperation' this weekend - hopefully I'll go down to visit him in a couple of weekends time.

* * *

Feels odd posting this on both Livejournal and MySpace, thank goodness Facebook doesn't have a blog facility - if it does, don't tell me!

Lego Star Wars - best game ever! [08 Jun 2007|10:44pm]
I'm addicted! I have completed the first 4 chapters of The Phantom Menace and was halfway through the 5th chapter when big brother started again! I found the Pod Racer level the hardest so far - almost object throwing frustrating at times. I did it in the end though and I'm very proud of myself. I've never, ever in my life, played a video game three times in one day and looked forward to the next time I can play it - I kind of get the attraction of video games after all these years of failed attempts with different consoles and different games.

I have Cars on the way, found it for just £7.99 from Blah DVD, and when I complete Lego Star Wars I'll get the second Lego Star Wars game which covers the original trilogy. After Gossy told me of a new Lego Star Wars game coming out later this year, which will combine both existing games with new levels, I did some research - not coming out for the PS2 :( Not sure it'll be worth paying uot for a PS3 just to play that game, though it does have a Blu-Ray drive so I could start buying Blu-Ray discs like the first 2 Pirates of the Caribbean films, hmmmm.....

ps2 [08 Jun 2007|04:35pm]
So, I bought Denise a PS2 and Kingdom Hearts a couple of months ago but we never set it up! Anyway, after seeing At World's End at the cinema I decided to get the game for the PS2 and so last week I finally set the PS2 up - no idea where Kingdom Hearts is though! The At World's End game is fun, and not to hard - which for a video game amateur like myself is great. After recommendations from 3 people I bought Lego Star Wars today and have just played for about an hour - working from home so that's my lunch break! It's loads of fun and impossible to die which is the kind of game I like! I've played a bit in Episode 1 and a bit in Episode 2 and have just printed out a walk-through as I stuck in Chapter 2 of Episode 1! After all the games consoles I've tried who'd have thought it'd be a PS2 that I bought for Denise that has been the most successful. As long as I stick to easy games I think I'll be ok - Disney Cars will be my next purchase. I got Smackdown v Raw for free through work but I'm nit sure I'll play that.

* * *

Off to see Steve and Kati tomorrow - be great to see little Noah and give him his presents, though at 5 1/2 months old he'll probably be quite indifferent to his gifts!

* * *

We are going to watch Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer next week and then the weekend after Denise is going to Devon for a few days and Gossy is coming up here - still need to order LDN tickets though I still can't use my Debit card as I lost my pin and am waiting for a new one so I can go to an ATM and activate the card!

* * *

Big Brother is enjoyable half the time and eyes bleeding bad at other times. While Channel 4 made the right decision booting Emily out I would have liked to have seen her get evicted and boo'd. Don't really have a favourite though I find the Twins quite sweet and Ziggy seems to be handling himself well considering he's in a house with 10 women. laura irritates the hell out of me as does Charly.

* * *

I preordered my Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book a few weeks ago - I won't be queuing up at midnight but I will be at the Hitchin Waterstones at normal opening time so I can get a good day's reading in - the next day we are to see McFly at Milton Keynes for an open air concert.

* * *

Been listening to the new Bon Jovi album, Lost Highway, and I'd say it's their best work since These Days - more like the old Bon Jovi that drew me in in the first place.

[01 Jun 2007|09:46pm]
So, what has happened in the last week...

I'm debit card deficcient at the moment as I cancelled my card thanks to a scam by Vista Print. When the new card comes through I won't be using it online - twice in 6 months is too much, even for a serial online shopper like myself. I have a 2nd account which I will transfer money to to use online if necessary. This way money won't be able to be taken out without me knowing.

* * *

Big Brother hit our screens again and we 11 women. A man is entering tonight and my guess is that he will have to evict 5 women to make way for 5 men to make it even split of the sexes. I haven't watched a great deal so far but I quite like the twins - they seem to be so happy with no agenda that I'd take their endless giggling over quiet bitching any day.

* * *

Still working on my own though I am interviewing 2-3 people next week with 2 more agencies looking for us. While it's quite tiring doing everything myself I'd prefer it that way to employing someone I'm not 110% sure about.

* * *

Denise has to go into work on Sunday for a stock take so I have lots of time to myself this weekend. I have plenty to be doing round the house and I still haven't watched SHIMMER #7!

* * *

Had to replace the clutch on Denise's car which cost £315 :(

* * *

I'm on Facebook - just search by name or email or however else it's done. I'm not that active on it - I only joined because someone at work said it had been mentioned in industry circles, not sure why as the benefits seem far fewer than things like MySpace.

Pirate of the Caribbean: At World's End [24 May 2007|11:30pm]

That was amazing - I was grinning from ear to ear the whole way through I was so happy to be watching it.

The characters were great, the acting was superb (Johnny Depp was at an all time high with Captain Jack this time), the story had lots of twists and turns which built really well to some amazing action and there were lots of bits from the ride, one bit which had me almost wetting mysef with excitement and wanting to shout 'this from the ride', but I didn't!

I didn't stay past the credits as I needed the loo - an excuse to go back again as something hapens apparently! I really loved it and after the bitter disappointment of Spider-Man 3 it was nice to watch a film that exceeded my expectations. Can't wait for the DVD - I want a 4 disc set with 20 hours of extras!

POTC: At World's End in 3 hours and 35 minutes. Pirates of the Caribbean boxers, t-shirt and watch will be worn - oh yes!

Thanks to Pigsback and a £20 voucher I got an awesome 750 page hardback biography of Walt Disney from CDOWOW arrive today. I've read a biography already but another slant on his life is very welcome.

My Creative Stone MP3 player also arrived today - not sure I'll use it much but I couldn't resist ordering it. Charged up in about 45 minutes which is pretty damn good.

Watched the season finalé of Heroes today - pretty awesome and I didn't expect it to go how it did - can't wait for season 2, or volume 2 as they are calling it.

Thanks to a screw up with Cineworld we will be watching in a normal screen in Stevenage rather than a the awesomely nice screen in Milton Keyenes - oh well, it's closer and it starts 40 mins earlier - still super excited about seeing it.

Just received issues 2 and 3 of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic book series. As soon as I finish Transformers: End of The Road, then I'm going to purchase and start on the Star Wars: Empire graphic novel series - with a few of the unread graphic novels on my book shelf thrown in.

* * *

Mum and Roger are coming up this weekend, only problem is Denise found out she has to work this Sunday - poo :(

* * *

I'm 2 Impacts and 85% of Sacrifice into my latest attempt to watch TNA. It was Damaja and Basham's joining that prompted me to take notice again. Just about to watch the main event of the aforementioned PPV, I hope Sting wins.

Seni wasn't as good as previous years - the venue change from Birmingham to London cut the size down by about 50% surprisingly. Met and interviewed a few fighters, see if you recognise them in these pictures where I look particularly goofy! No peaking at image properties!

28th October 2007 - I will be at Wembley Stadium to see the Miami Dolphins take on the New York Giants in a regular season game - wooo hooo! I'm more excited to get these tickets than for any other tickets I've ever got for anything. Not being a flyer I didn't think I'd ever get to see the Dolphins (had nobody to go to the 1988 America Bowl with) but now I will - yippee!

gossfather will be coming up to the weekend of the 23rd June - we have the Star Wars exhibition followed by a LDN show in Romford planned - should be fun.

12 episodes into Charmed series 8 which finally got released on DVD - still in the majority, still really like it.

Got the 5 episodes of the Painkiller Jane TV series, not watched it yet - anyone know if it's any good? Also got episode 1 of Traveler, again, not watched it. With 8 episodes left of Las Vegas season 4 and the latest Heroes to watch it'll be a few lunchtimes until I get to see these new shows.

I got one of 'the' emails today giving me a special password to buy 2 tickets for the game when they go on sale on Wednesday to the first wave of registrants. Nothing is guaranteed at this point but I am that much closer to seeing the game - wahooo!

Also, Dan Marino will be coming over to help promote it - Dan f'n Marino, I have to meet him!

more than usual [11 May 2007|06:24am]
Within 36 hours of sending my Archos 604 Wifi back, Amazon had processed a refund - still waiting for the money to hit my account but that should be any day now. I am close to ordering a Cowon A2 - amongst other things it boasts a 10 hour battery life for video viewing which is awesome. It's received universally great reviews and athough an A3 is coming out, that will be more exoensive and doesn't even have a Korean release date yet, let alone a US/Europe one.

* * *

It's almost certain that Friday Night Lights has had a 2nd season commissioned which is awesome news - finally a show I like that doesn't get cancelled at the first opportunity. I fear Veronica Mars may not be as lucky, it has had 4 good seasons though.

* * *

Best issue of Total Film ever:

+ Star Wars photo book supplement
+ Pirates of the Caribbean 3 on the cover and the main feature inside
+ Natalie Portman interview, and accompanying photo which is amazing

Reviews still suck though, 4 stars for Spidey 3, corporate kiss-arses.

On Wednesday the Miami Dolphins v New York Giants at Wemblet tickets go on sale - advantage of signing up months ago? I get a presales link for tickets on Wednesday, along with the other 500,000 that signed up! Chance of getting tickets is slim but I live in hope.

Charmed Season 8 has finally been released so I bought it yesterday - that'sour weekend sorted because our original plans have changed, our trip to go and see Steve and Kati has been put on hold as Denise is suffering from a rotten cold/flu. She was off work on Wednesday, had her day off yesterday and is hopefully on the road to revoery, but still carrying too much 'ill bits' to be around a 5 month old baby :(

I have packaged up my Archos 604 Wifi to send back to Amazon.co.uk - it wasn't working properly. After giving it a full charge up, I played a video for 5 minutes today and the battery indicator went down to just 50%! I have requested a refund so I can get whatever I want to replace it. Reason I didn't request a replacement is because I haven't used the WiFi apart from the day I got it and that added £50+ to the price - just got to hope they do give me a refund. I will get another portable media player and maybe even another Archos - the research begins, again! In the mean time I will have to go back to my Zen Vision M for lunch time viewing!

spidey [07 May 2007|06:56am]
Went to see Spider-Man 3 yesterday at Milton Keynes. First off, the cinema was ace. They have 2 screens which are 'delux' - this consists of smaller room with fewer seats which are more spread part than normal and with mega comfy, reclining seats! There is a also a private bar that you can go in before entering the screen. Needless to say we got tickets for this as Spider-Man 3 was being shown in the delux screens and it was my best cinema experience in ages, as far as comfort and lack of annoying punters...film was sh*t!

click to read my Spidey 3 thoughtsCollapse )

I was so looking forward to this after the hype and advertising but it disappointed, big time. It's doing major business at the box office, crushing Pirates of the Caribbean 2's 2006 records which is a travesty. Speaking of POTC, the trailer for At World's End was the best bit about the whole on-scren experience, can't wait for that. We have booked tickets for At World's End at the same delux screen for the 24th - can' wait, the trailer alone (I know they show good bits, but what the hell) is better than Spider-Man 3,

* * *

It happened to be Collectormania at the Milton Keynes at 'The Centre' with tons of film, TV and comic book memrobilia on sale, as well as people doing signings. I was temoted to queue up and meet Ray Park (Darth Maul) but I didn't have my camera - he'll be at Celebration should I have the urge. I saw the guy who played Billy in Gremlins and he still looks the same age as he did in the films! Amazingly I didn't buy anything, though I wanted the 18" Mickey Mouse Jedi Statue though at £170 it was a bit pricey!
